Sunnylea

Sunnylea is a well treed mature & picturesque community located south of Bloor St. W, north of Berry Road, west of the Humber River and east of the meandering Mimico Creek/Royal York Rd. area. It is especially popular with young families as it is well know for it’s excellent schools (6 in total) – Norseman, Parklawn, Sunnylea Jr., Etobicoke CI, Etobicoke School of the Arts, and Sainte-Margueritte-d’Youville. Sunnylea community offers area services for seniors and couples too!.
The community has many parks along the pretty Mimico Creek, and has access to the paved recreational pathways along the Humber River. For seniors Fairfield Senior’s Centre includes a lounge, library & host several special events. There are both indoor and outdoor pools and even a winter ice rink (Parklawn Bubble) that converts to tennis courts in summer! There are a large variety of recreational programs for all ages available though Norseman Community School & Parklawn Community school.

Convienently located Sunnylea residents are a short walk , or bus ride to either Royal York or Old Mill subways. It is approx. 15-20 minutes to downtown Toronto by car, and for cyclists it is a quick ride to the waterfront trails leading downtown. The lands were first settled by Alexander Thompson in 1803 and he developed wonderful fruit (apple, pear, cherry & plum) orchards and later joined with Sunnylea families who had established thriving local market gardens. The community was named Sunnylea in 1907 when it’s first school was built. Sunnylea’s old farms were subdivided in the 1930’s and 1940’s when the present neighbourhood was developed. A few of the original farm house remain and can be seen along Islington Ave. and Prince Edward Drive.
The homes built during the 1940’s and 1950’s represent Sunnylea’s unique character with examples of Tudor style two stories(some with wonderful riverstone facades and chimney details and front porches), compact/smaller style and ranch bungalows, and one and one half storey homes. Most homes are detached with wider style lots having at least 30 ft frontage featuring private drives & streetscapes often without side walks, all lending the feeling of a country-style suburb to the general area!

Sunnylea residents have close access to The Kingsway shopping district along Bloor St. W, with its cast iron street lamps and flags on the boulevard median. Bloor St. W. features a wonderful variety of restaurants, green grocers, boutiques, professional services and high end specialty shops.
